Intimacy and sexuality often involve more than just physical connection. Emotional barriers, past experiences, and inner conflicts can quietly shape how we relate to ourselves and our partners in intimate moments. Internal Family Systems (IFS), a therapeutic approach that explores the different parts within us, and can help us gain more awareness for the underlying working of our minds and bodies in the bedroom.
What Is Internal Family Systems?
Internal Family Systems is a model of psychotherapy developed by Richard Schwartz. It views the mind as made up of multiple "parts," each with its own feelings, thoughts, and roles. These parts interact like members of a family, sometimes cooperating and sometimes clashing. At the core is the "Self," a calm, compassionate center that can lead the internal system toward balance.
How Internal Family Systems Relates to Your Sex Life
Sexuality is deeply connected to our emotional and psychological state. Parts within us can influence how we experience desire, vulnerability, and connection. For example:
Some common "protective parts" that may show up in the bedroom are
"thinking" parts, parts that stay in thoughts, ideas, to do lists.
"spectatoring" parts, parts that are observing and analyzing the experience of sex.
"avoidant" parts, parts that may be avoiding intimacy, closeness, touch.
"rage" parts, parts that are mad at your partner, mad at the patriarchy, or mad at not getting certain needs met.
"people pleaser" parts, parts that want to make sure your partner is happy before yourself.
None of these parts are "bad" or "good", they are just different forms of protection in your system. Often times, protective parts are trying to help us manage pain from different experiences over time.
By identifying and working with these parts, IFS helps you uncover the root causes of sexual challenges and opens the door to more authentic, fulfilling intimacy.
